At ACC Theatre, we are gearing up for the 38th Annual Summer Children’s Theatre Festival – the first with our new director, Chris Tennison! He started his theatrical training in earnest under the tutelage of Dr. Jay Burton at ACC Drama, 30 years ago this fall. Since leaving here in 1995, he has had a career in theatre that spans acting, directing, designing, producing, and most importantly working in theatre for youth.
ACC Theatre is excited to continue our children’s theatre program under Chris’ leadership – because, like Chris, we believe in the benefits the performing arts have on mental health and building the soft skills that lead to success in school and life.
This summer, we are opening up the ages for our productions from 6 all the way up to 99! This will allow even more folks to come and experience the magic of theatre. Participants get the opportunity to experience a full audition, rehearsal, and performance process. Groups from local daycares, summer camps, and other local childcare centers come to see the Festival performances. For many onstage and in the audience, this is their first experience with theatre. Through donations and support from the community, we are able to keep our ticket prices low, and there is no – and never has been – any cost to audition or participate in our productions. The Summer Children’s Theatre Festival is part of ACC Theatre’s core mission: to make high quality theatre and theatre education accessible to everyone.
The ACC Foundation works with us to raise funds to continue this mission. If you would like to support us, please visit the Foundation’s website, where you can donate to any of the ongoing campaigns, including the Summer Children’s Theatre Festival. Your contribution will go directly toward next year’s 39th Annual Summer Children’s Theatre Festival program. For more information, please contact us at boxoffice@alvincollege.edu.

ACC Theatre would like to thank the production crew of tick, tick… BOOM! for all their hard work! Comprised of ACC Drama students and community volunteers, the crew was responsible for all of the technical elements that went into this production – from handling the actors’ microphones and other sound equipment to creating dirty dishes to make Jon’s apartment look just the right amount of messy.
The production crew of tick, tick… BOOM! (2023)
This production was personal for a lot of our cast and crew. “It’s personal for me right now,” said ACC Drama graduate and Houston-area actor Justin Morgan Brown, who played Jon, “because I’m… I’m not turning thirty like the character is, but I’m getting close. I’m twenty-seven, and I’ve started to hear my own ‘tick, tick, booms.’ It’s kind of cathartic, in a way, to play this role.” Musical theatre major Desiree’ Knotts also feels personally connected to Jonathan Larson’s work. “I saw Rent at a very, very, very young age…. Something about the characters and the struggles that they had with poverty… related to me a lot.”

TICK, TICK… BOOM! –book, music, and lyrics by Jonathan Larson
Before Rent, there was tick, tick… BOOM! This autobiographical musical by Jonathan Larson, the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning composer of Rent, is the story of a composer and the sacrifices that he made to achieve his big break in theatre. Set in 1990, everyone will love this compelling story of personal discovery that embraces the universal ideal of holding onto your dreams through life’s most difficult challenges.

tick, tick… BOOM! is an autobiographical musical by Jonathan Larson, the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning composer of Rent. Set in 1990, the “rock monologue,” as it’s been described, is a compelling story of personal discovery that embraces the universal ideal of holding onto your dreams through life’s most difficult challenges.
Jonathan Larson’s iconic rock musical, Rent, had a major impact on Broadway and the musical theatre industry after its premiere in the mid-1990s. It was one of the longest running shows on Broadway, won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Musical, and introduced rock music to the musical theatre world.
tick, tick… BOOM! tells the story of Larson’s years before the success of Rent, when he was still struggling to get his first major project, Superbia, off the ground. The title comes from the internal stress he was carrying at still being a ‘promising young composer’ when he was almost 30 – as though there was a ticking clock following him around.
The cast and director at a rehearsal of tick, tick… BOOM! (2023)
Jonathan Larson died from an undiagnosed heart condition the day before Rent had its first preview performance. His family and the cast decided to move forward with the performance in his honor. At the end of it, an audience member broke the silence before the curtain call by saying “Thank you, Jonathan Larson.”
